June 6-13, 2009

Happiness - good fortune; pleasure; contentment; joy.
Where does it come from? In today’s society we are told that the more things we own, the happier we’ll be. Possessions are a key factor to happiness right? Wrong. It’s people. Friends. Family. God.

The second week in June 2009 changed my life. I learned that I don’t need any worldly possessions to lift my joy. All I need is the reassurance that God is with me no matter where I go. And I found that in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

On June 6, I had the privilege of traveling down with 11 other amazing people. Our first day on the job I did not lift a single finger to help the team in the labor that we were providing for the church. Instead I was occupied with approximately 8 to 10 children hanging from any appendage of my body they could touch, at all times. At the end of the day I told the team how sorry I was for not helping, but in my defense, I couldn’t’ help it. But the team told me that I was a bigger help then I knew. They were right. By the end of the week I had established relationships with those children that will be imbedded in my mind forever.

We held a VBS program three times that week, twice for the local church in the city and once for the children up on the mountain. The kids really seemed to enjoy the arts and crafts, music, and bible stories that we provided for them.

While on this trip I realized how God can use just one person with a vision to make a difference in the lives of many people. Pastor Pedro is a man on fire for God. He has listened and followed where God has led him. We should learn from Pedro’s example and make ourselves willing to listen to God and go where He wants us to go.
That is exactly what our team decided our motto for this trip should be, Going God Knows Where, To Do God Knows What.
